Summer Flat Spell: Survival Guide

The Flat Spell Survival Guide

Because Miami summers can get the best of us sometimes. And maybe staring at webcams all day might not be the best summer plans…

It happens every summer. You wake up, check the surf report, and… yeah, FLAT. At best maybe you see some shin high onshore slop. The kind of stuff that makes you think why you picked surfing in Miami as your hobby.

Thankfully flat spells doesn’t have to be a wasted day. Miami has got a plethora of things to keep you moving and ready for the next swell. And right here in the shop we got plenty of equipment to keep you busy. So here’s how to make the most of it when the ocean decides to take a break.

Grab a Skateboard or a Carver

This one is a classic for a reason. For generations now, the humble skateboard has been the solution for many discouraged surfers. Not only is skating around your area a great way to discover new places and still get fresh air, but it’s actual training to stay fit for the water.

What’s cool about skating is that there’s so many paths to choose from. Stay classic and pick up a popsicle style board and start learning some tricks at your local skatepark, pick up a cruiser and go up and down the boardwalks near the beach, or the new option is picking up a Carver skateboard. The Carver mimics the rail to rail feeling of surfing, allowing you to practice direct movements that correlate in the water.

There are plenty of places to hit up in Miami for a skate sesh; from the super fun pumptrack and park at Haulover Skatepark to the proper core feeling of Lot 11 in downtown. Heck throw down some cones anywhere and hit some surf drills.

We carry a bunch of decks and boards so come in and well be able to set you up in no time.

Paddleboard The Bay

Oceans flat? Head to the bay!

Flat water paddle boarding is legitimately one of the best workouts you can get. Arms, Core and Legs; all being hit while your sailing through Miami’s intercoastal. Grab a board and get a unique look of Miami from the water without any turbulence to knock you off. Biscayne Bay is right there and in the morning when the water glasses off it is unreal.

We carry SUPS from NSP to Cat 5 in the shop, whether you just getting into it or been paddling for years, we gotchu.

Skim it Brah

Small or no surf…that’s actually ideal for skimboarding!

The shorebreak in Miami Beach has just enough wash to work with. Skimming is one of those things that looks easier than it is, but as soon as you get a half a second slide on the sand, it becomes hyper addictive. This sport can be very relevant to your surfing, learning balance, timing, and reading the ocean. All skills that are going to sharpen your surfing.

We carry both easy beginner wooden boards to just start off with to some sick ZAP boards for the peeps who are looking to really progress in this skill. If you need help finding good places to skim just come over and well point you in the right direction.

Just Get Out There

The ocean will pump again…(Hopefully). But in the meantime, there’s plenty of reasons to get up and get out there.

Come by the shop and grab what you need, whether its on land, on the ocean, or right in between we got you covered.

Yeew 🤙
